On June 1, 2022, the court handed down a 4-year sentence to Teresiah Wanjiku Ndungi, an employee of the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation, for forging an academic certificate.

Wanjiku's conviction stems from her use of a forged Diploma in Archives & Records Management, purportedly obtained from the Kenya Institute of Management, to secure employment.

According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Wanjiku's actions resulted in the fraudulent acquisition of Kshs 479,021 in salary, based on fake academic qualifications.

The EACC has highlighted the increasing cases of forgery of academic certificates by individuals seeking public office, and has committed to working with relevant agencies to address the issue.
