On June 1, 2022, the newly renovated Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museum was abuzz with activity as guests began streaming in for the 59th Madaraka day celebrations.

With an estimated 30,000 attendees expected, the event marks President Uhuru Kenyatta's last national event as President.

Following the relaxation of COVID-19 containment measures, the number of guests has been increased from 10,000, with Nairobi Regional Commissioner Kang'ethe Thuku emphasizing the importance of observing COVID-19 preventive measures.

Thuku urged Kenyans to wear face masks, stating that no one would be allowed to access Uhuru Gardens without one.

The renovation project at Uhuru Gardens has been completed, featuring a National government museum, a shopping and business complex, a convention centre, and a hotel.

As the event gets underway, Thuku assured motorists that none of the roads in Nairobi would be closed, and that there would be sufficient security officers to coordinate traffic.
