June 1, 2022, marked a significant milestone for many businesses as employees began to leave their jobs in search of new opportunities. The reasons for this mass exodus are varied, but one thing is certain: it's essential to handle the situation professionally and efficiently to minimize disruption to the team and business.

As a business owner, it's natural to feel a sense of loss and betrayal when an employee leaves, especially if they're going to work for a competitor. However, it's crucial to put emotions aside and focus on the task at hand – ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining a positive relationship with the departing employee.

Here are some steps to take when an employee leaves:

Conduct an exit interview

Arrange an exit interview with the employee to learn about their experience with the company, the reasons for their departure, and how to improve human resource services. This will provide valuable insights into areas for improvement and help maintain a positive relationship with the departing employee.

Take care of legal requirements

Ensure all legal requirements are met, including paying the employee their full salary for the notice period and any required service fees, commissions, or bonuses. Consult a human resource professional or labour lawyer to ensure compliance with industry laws and regulations.

Shift tasks and roles

Ask the departing employee to provide a list of their day-to-day tasks and updates on ongoing projects. This will help redistribute and reassign tasks to current employees with the necessary skills and experience.

Make a plan for replacement

Decide whether to backfill the role or redistribute responsibilities to other employees. If backfilling, start making plans to find a suitable replacement, ensuring they have the required skills and are a cultural fit for the company.

Evaluate your leadership

Survey remaining employees about their experience with management and leadership to identify potential issues contributing to high employee turnover. Address these issues promptly to prevent further losses.
