On June 1, 2022, the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) announced the reintroduction of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and related fees, effective immediately. This decision follows a Cabinet approval and reverses the earlier suspension of the EIA processing fee.

According to Nema, the reinstatement of the 0.1 per cent project value levy is necessary to facilitate the effective undertaking of its mandate under the Environment Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) 1999. However, this move is likely to increase the overall cost of living, particularly in the infrastructural and housing dimensions.

As Tom Smith noted, 'Leadership is the ability to facilitate movement in the needed direction and have people feel good about it.' In this case, Nema's decision to reintroduce the fees without prior consultation with the public raises questions about the government's approach to facilitating ease of doing business.

Kenya's environment is facing significant challenges, including the loss of species and destruction of the ecosystem. To mitigate these effects, Kenyans are encouraged to take action, such as planting trees, which have numerous environmental benefits, including reducing storm water runoff, improving air quality, and providing food and protection for animals.

When planting trees, it is essential to choose species that will improve the environment, such as avocado trees, which conserve the environment and generate income. Species like eucalyptus, which have a negative impact on the earth, should be avoided.
