On July 18, 2019, Wazito FC president Ricardo Badoer made headlines by calling for a ban on betting in Kenya.
Badoer, a vocal sports administrator, expressed his opposition to the gaming industry, which he believes has a detrimental effect on sports clubs.
As the Kenyan government cracks down on betting firms, Badoer has reaffirmed his stance, stating that Wazito FC will never accept money from the gaming industry.
"I said it before, I am against gambling and it should be banned," Badoer tweeted in response to a question about the government's move to deport six directors of betting companies.
Wazito FC's decision to stay away from betting firms is a stark contrast to other Kenyan clubs, which have rushed to woo gaming companies for sponsorship deals.
Currently, Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Mathare United, and Sofapaka are sponsored by betting companies, while the national team Harambee Stars also has a sponsorship deal with a betting firm.
Badoer's stance has sparked debate, with some questioning the potential impact of a ban on the sports industry.
However, Badoer remains resolute, hinting that Wazito FC will soon secure new sponsors.
