On May 31, 2022, Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria and his supporters stormed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices in Nairobi, sparking drama at the Anniversary Towers building.
For the second day running, wa Iria was seeking an audience with IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati after being knocked out of the presidential contest.
Wa Iria claims that he met all the requirements, but the electoral agency failed to clear him, leading to his disqualification as a presidential contender in the August General Election.
While stuck in the lift for more than 30 minutes, wa Iria exclaimed, 'This is deliberate. You will kill us.'
On Monday, May 30, 2022, the retiring county boss caused a scene at the Bomas of Kenya where the commission was clearing presidential aspirants, blocking the entrance with his car and declaring, 'No wa Iria, no election.'
