As the 2022 general election campaigns officially kick off, President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that he will not be actively participating in Raila Odinga's presidential campaigns, a decision that has been met with mixed reactions from the public.
Speaking to Radio Taifa and KBC Channel 1 TV, Coalition National Executive Council Vice Chair David Murathe revealed that President Uhuru has decided to take a backseat to allow Raila's running mate Martha Karua to solidify the Mount Kenya voting bloc for Azimio.
According to Murathe, the unveiling of Karua as Raila's running mate has changed Azimio's fortunes in the Mt. Kenya region, where Deputy President William Ruto enjoys considerable support.
President Uhuru has endorsed Raila as his preferred successor after severing links with Deputy President William Ruto, who is seeking to succeed him on a UDA party ticket.
Despite holding a Mt. Kenya leaders meeting dubbed Sagana III to drum up support for Raila, President Uhuru has decided to step back and allow Raila's campaign to proceed without his active involvement.
