IEBC Blocks George Wajackoyah's Presidential Bid ¶
Roots Party presidential candidate Prof George Wajackoyah's presidential bid hit a snag after he failed to meet the requirement on signatures from supporters. He presented only from 17 counties, falling short of the 24 devolved units required.
According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati, Prof Wajackoyah had complied with all documentations except the supporters list. Chebukati stated that only 17 counties were compliant, while the others had shortfalls.
Prof Wajackoyah and his running mate Justina Wamae expressed confidence that they would be on the ballot come August 9, despite the setback. They claimed to have the data and would add the remaining bit to meet the commission's requirements.
However, the IEBC rejected Prof Wajackoyah's application, giving him an opportunity to comply on June 2 at 3pm. The clearance of Mr Mong'are, a comedian and presidential candidate, came on the same day, after he successfully submitted the requisite documents.
On the other hand, Murang'a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria and gospel musician Reuben Kigame protested their exclusion from the list of those to appear before the commission for clearance. Mr Wa Iria blocked the road leading to Bomas of Kenya, the venue of the clearance exercise, for the better part of the day.
Mr Wa Iria alleged the existence of a scheme by the IEBC to clear only three presidential candidates to contest in the August General Election. He vowed to continue camping at the venue until he is slotted for clearance, saying 'no election will happen if I do not contest.'
