Murangá Gubernatorial Race: A Battle of the Irungus' ¶
On May 26, 2022, four top contestants in the Murangá gubernatorial race shared the stage in an exclusive debate organized by KBC Channel one to present their manifestos to the people of Murangá.
The four contestants who share the Irungu surname are Senator Irungu Kang'ata, Former MP Jamleck Irungu Kamau, former PS Irungu Nyakera, and fellow former PS Joseph Wairagu Irungu.
During the debate, the contestants presented their visions for the county, with each promising to address key issues such as healthcare, agriculture, and poverty.
Senator Kang'ata pledged to initiate the Ward Development Fund to ensure Wards benefit directly from funds allocated to the County. He also promised to centralise services, create employment for the youth, and empower women through social and economic activities.
Dr. Moses Mwangi, who is contesting for the third time, promised to establish level 5 Hospitals in every sub-county and elevate the Murangá Hospital into a teaching and referral hospital. He also vowed to ensure people get medicine from hospitals within the first 100 days of his administration.
Joseph Mbai, who has served as CEC in the County, disagreed with other aspirants, saying they were criticizing the health sector without merit. He insisted that residents are able to access good healthcare services in all Murangá hospitals and challenged the aspirants to visit the hospitals to assess the situation.
Eng. Henry Gaate decried the levels of poverty and the jigger menace in Murangá County, saying such problems can only be solved through empowerment and job creation for the youth. He promised to industrialize the county, introduce mobile hospitals, deal with cartels in the pharmaceutical industry, and venture into drug manufacturing.
Irungu Nyakera, who is vying on a Farmers party ticket, said he has an 8-point agenda if elected the next Murangá Governor. He promised to focus on agriculture and value addition, women and youth empowerment, improving access to quality healthcare, education, and other key areas.
