On May 26, 2022, the National Police Service (NPS) responded to remarks made by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, stating that police officers do not need education to perform their duties.

According to NPS spokesman Bruno Shioso, Malala's comments were 'outrageous and unwarranted' and demeaned the police service.

Shioso emphasized that policing communities requires knowledge and that guns are only tools to achieve efficiency, not a substitute for education.

The NPS is a professional entity composed of diverse Kenyans, comprising competent, professional, knowledgeable, and highly skilled officers, Shioso stated.

He urged officers and Kenyans to ignore negative sentiments and treat them with contempt.

Malala made the remarks during a Kenya Kwanza rally in Kakamega, where he said police work does not need highly qualified personnel.
