On July 17, 2019, Nairobi News reported on a controversy surrounding a Football Kenya Federation (FKF) official.

FKF Chief Executive Robert Muthomi was accused of using his position to attempt to illegally transfer a Kenyan player, Sofapaka's striker John Avire, to an Egyptian club.

Avire had participated in the African Cup of Nations with the Harambee Stars team and returned to Kenya on July 4.

However, eight days later, Muthomi wrote a letter to the Egyptian embassy requesting permission for Avire to travel back to Cairo, sparking suspicions that the player was heading back to attend trials with an unnamed Egyptian club without Sofapaka's blessings.

Sofapaka president Elly Kalekwa accused Muthomi of conflict of interest, alleging that the FKF official was trying to facilitate the player's transfer for personal gain.
