On July 17, 2019, Channel 4 News revealed that Alexandra Phillips, a British Member of the European Parliament, had secretly worked for Jubilee in Kenya's 2017 presidential poll.
Phillips, who was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for the South East England constituency in May 2019, confessed that she was instrumental in drafting hate messages targeting Raila Odinga, President Uhuru Kenyatta's main rival in the polls.
According to Phillips, Jubilee Party paid her 300,000 Pounds per month, equivalent to 38M Kenyan shillings, to work on the campaign. She claimed that her work was so sensitive that she was told to tell anyone who asked that she was working as an air hostess.
Phillips initially denied any involvement with the data firm, Cambridge Analytica, which has been accused of influencing the Brexit result in the UK and the American election result. However, in a secret recording by Channel 4 News, she admitted to working for Cambridge Analytica, who had a contract with Jubilee.
Phillips said that she was responsible for writing President Kenyatta's speeches and talking points for rallies and State House statements, as well as training his communications team.
She also sent a statement to Channel 4, stating that she worked as a freelance contractor for President Kenyatta's team, focusing on speechwriting, and that the campaigns she worked on promoted peace and national unity in Kenya.
