On May 16, 2022, former Water PS Wairagu wa Maai made a significant announcement in his gubernatorial bid, picking Evanson Muiyuro as his running mate for the August election.
Wairagu, who is the only aspirant to pick a male running mate, cited Muiyuro's diligent service as the Chairman of Gatanga NG-CDF for the past five years as a key factor in his decision.
"I have picked someone who I am sure will support my Administration and help me achieve the development goals I have for Murang'a County," Wairagu stated.
Wairagu's choice of Muiyuro sets him apart from his competitors, who have all picked female running mates. Jubilee Party candidate Jamleck Kamau picked Dr. Naomi Kagone, UDA candidate Irungu Kang'ata settled on Dr. Winne Njeri, while Irungu Nyakera opted for Catherine Mugo.
Despite this, Wairagu emphasized that his administration will prioritize gender equality, with over 30 percent of jobs in the County going to women. He also pledged to establish a Ksh 100 million youth fund to help young people start income-generating projects.
Muiyuro, a prominent businessman in the region, welcomed the gesture, stating, "I will cooperate and work with Wairagu to ensure the people of this County get better services in all sectors."
