On Tuesday evening, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga made the announcement at a fundraiser for the late Joe Kadenge at Charter Hall in Nairobi, stating that the request to rename the stadium had been finalized.

According to Raila, he had made the request to President Uhuru Kenyatta, who accepted and both have formally spoken to Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko to ensure the renaming process is expedited.

“Joe was a legend. And that is why I proposed to President Kenyatta on the possibility of renaming City Stadium in his honour,” said Raila.

The stadium will now be called Joe Kadenge Stadium, and a series of events will be held to honour Joe during the launch of the new name.

Additionally, following President Kenyatta's order, Governor Sonko has agreed to ensure the paperwork is done to hand over Joe's house in South B to his family.

During the fundraiser, notable contributors included former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who gave Ksh 1 million, and President Kenyatta, who also contributed a similar amount.
