On July 16, 2019, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard confirmed that 18-year-old midfielder Ethan Ampadu would be leaving Stamford Bridge this summer for a loan move.

Ampadu, who played only five games for Chelsea under Maurizio Sarri last season, has not travelled with the team's squad for their pre-season tour of Japan.

According to Lampard, Ampadu will have to go out on loan where he can be afforded active playing time next season.

"Ethan is not here as we're looking at the possibility of him going on loan for the season," Lampard said on Tuesday after arriving in Japan.

"I tried to sign Ethan on loan at Derby last year, so I'm a big fan, but with the minutes he played last year, I have to think of the bigger picture and the interests of Ethan and of Chelsea," he further explained.
