On July 16, 2019, SportPesa issued a statement in response to allegations that it allows underage Kenyans to bet on its platform.

According to Google Analytics, 59.74% of SportPesa's bettors are between the ages of 24-35, while 23.46% are between 35-44 years old, and 4.90% are between 18-24 years old.

"There are no underage players on SportPesa's platform. SportPesa does not own a single betting shop in the country," the statement read in part.

The company also stated that playing on the SportPesa platform is only through mobile money, which restricts persons under the age of 18.

As of June 2019, 705,813 bettors visited the site between June 1 and June 30.

Meanwhile, the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) had declined to renew the operating licences of 27 betting and gaming companies, effectively shutting down their operations.
