On July 16, 2019, a group of residents in Pangani, Nairobi, woke up to the sound of bulldozers and council vehicles, as they were forcibly evicted from their homes.

Aisha Muhamed, the wife of a bedridden elderly man, recounted the traumatic experience, saying they were given a verbal notice and not a signed one.

'We were told to leave, but they didn't give us any time to pack our belongings,' Muhamed said, fighting back tears.

The elderly man, a former civil servant, had been suffering from cancer and had been bedridden for quite some time. He had known the Pangani house as his home for a long time.

As the Ghetto Radio crew arrived at the scene, they found the man helpless, still lying on the bed in the bedroom, while his wife tried to move their belongings to avert further destruction.

More than 50 families were left homeless following the 12 am forceful evictions conducted by Nairobi city askaris.
