On Saturday, 7th May, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha addressed concerns over the relocation of schools within Kisumu's Central Business District (CBD), dismissing Governor Anyang' Nyong'o's plans.
Published on 7th May 2022, Magoha stated that schools are 'safe' wherever they are located, warning against relocation without public participation.
'As we are now, every Kenyan school is safe as you can imagine where it is,' Magoha said. 'If there is an issue and it comes to the ministry, we shall take it to public participation.'
Magoha's comments came in response to Governor Nyong'o's proposal to relocate schools within the CBD to make way for economic and integrated business areas.
According to Nyong'o, the land currently occupied by schools in the CBD is valuable and should be utilized for more economic activities.
'Considering the value of the place, that land needs to be useful,' Nyong'o said. 'We need to construct an integrated urban center rather than schools.'
Nyong'o suggested that schools be relocated to areas where they can share facilities, reducing the excessive use of government land.
'Each school has a field, a swimming pool, and other amenities that have occupied land,' Nyong'o said. 'Why don't we take them to an area where schools share amenities? We don't need to have a field for each school in a town.'
The institutions set to be relocated include Kisumu Boys, Kisumu Girl's High School, and Manyatta Arabs School.
