Microsoft's Xbox Cloud gaming service has made it possible for iOS users to play Fortnite for free, circumventing Apple's App Store restrictions.
The move is seen as a direct challenge to Apple's dominance in the gaming market, with Microsoft betting big on cloud gaming. In a statement, Microsoft said, 'It's an important step to add a Free-to-Play title to the cloud gaming catalog as we continue our cloud journey. We will look to bring more Free-to-Play games people love in the future.'
Fortnite's absence from the App Store has led to workarounds, with Nvidia's Geoforce Now service offering a closed beta version of the game in January. However, Microsoft's Xbox Cloud gaming service is now the most accessible way for iOS users to play Fortnite, with no installation or membership required.
To play Fortnite on iOS for free, users need to follow these steps:
- Open a browser on their phone and access Xbox.com/Play
- Sign in to their Microsoft Account
- Connect to their Epic Account
- Play Fortnite for free
Microsoft's cloud gaming service is currently available in 26 countries, and it will be interesting to see how Apple responds to this move, especially with their own gaming subscription service in the works.
