On July 16, 2019, an investigative report sparked outrage among Kenyan customers by exposing a secret practice among some supermarkets and butchers to maximize profits.
According to the report, diced beef and minced meat were the easiest to lace with a chemical substance, making them a popular choice for mothers weaning their babies.
A concerned citizen took to Facebook to share her experience with a suspicious meat purchase from a butchery in NAKURU town. She had bought the meat on Saturday and, after watching a Red Alert episode on NTV, decided to conduct a social experiment to check for any chemical substances.
She thawed the meat and observed that it had no odor, did not attract houseflies, and showed no signs of blood spillage, despite being frozen for two days. Her findings confirmed her worst fears, leading her to call out the supermarkets for prioritizing profits over customer health.
While some supermarkets have remained silent, others have been accused of indulging in the practice, leaving customers to demand cleaner business practices.
