On April 26, 2022, former Kitui Senator David Musila shared a remarkable story of hiding former President Mwai Kibaki in a store during the 1982 coup attempt in Kenya.

Speaking after paying his respects to Kibaki's body, which was lying in state at the parliament precincts, Musila recalled that the late former President was in danger of being captured by the military during the coup attempt.

At the time, Musila served as the Provincial Commissioner (PC) for the former Central Province, and he found himself responsible for Kibaki's security, who was in Othaya. Musila stated, "In the year 1982 during the failed coup attempt, he was in Othaya at home. So, I came and hid him somewhere."

He hid Kibaki in a store inside the Nyeri club, and when the attempt ended, he brought him back to Statehouse for a cabinet meeting.

Musila also recalled pulling Kibaki from a ditch during his accident in 2002 at the Machakos Junction and quickly rushing him to hospital.
