On April 26, 2022, former Kitui Senator David Musila shared a remarkable story of his close friendship with the late Mwai Kibaki. Speaking after viewing Kibaki's body, which was lying in state at the parliament precincts, Musila recalled a time when he had to hide the former President in a store in a Nyeri club during the 1982 coup attempt.
At the time, Kibaki was serving as Vice President under Daniel Moi and was in danger of being captured by the military during the coup attempt. Musila, who was the Provincial Commissioner for Central Province, found himself responsible for Kibaki's security when he was in Othaya.
According to Musila, he hid Kibaki in a store inside the Nyeri club, ensuring that when the officers came looking for him, they would not find him. After the attempt ended, Musila brought Kibaki back to Statehouse for a cabinet meeting.
Musila also served as an assistant minister in Kibaki's second administration and recalled another instance where he pulled the former President from a ditch during his accident in 2002 at the Machakos Junction and quickly rushed him to hospital.
