Kenya's education sector is gearing up for a major overhaul as the government prepares to train 22,000 teachers to prepare them to teach secondary school students starting January 2023.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha, the training will focus on 60,000 teachers from public and private schools by January next year.
"We have over nine million students receiving CBC training. The government is working to ensure that there are adequate infrastructure, especially classrooms, to accommodate the large number of students," Professor Magoha said.
The government aims to complete the construction of 6,470 classrooms by the end of April this year. These classrooms will be used by students in the first grade of secondary school under the CBC system.
Since the government initially aimed to build 10,000 classrooms, the construction of the remaining 3,530 classrooms is expected to be completed between May and August 2022.
The government started implementing the project in 2016, but it has been criticized by some politicians and parents, who argue that the cost of the project is too high, especially during these economically challenging times.
