Published on July 15, 2019, an NTV exposé has left Kenyans worried about the meat they consume. The exposé revealed that some meat outlets in Kenya, including supermarkets, use hazardous chemicals to preserve meat.
According to the exposé, the outlets use a chemical known as Dawa ya Nyama, which is known for its preservative properties. The outlets claim that they use the chemical to prevent meat from spoiling after sales.
Investigative journalist Dennis Okari spoke to staff members of the outlets, who revealed that they use the chemical to preserve meat. The staff members claimed that they use the chemical to prevent meat from spoiling after sales.
Okari decided to conduct further investigations by purchasing meat from three different outlets and taking it to a lab for analysis. The results showed that the meat contained hazardous chemicals.
"Nyama haifai kuharibika hapa. Hiyo ni hasara. Tunajaribu kupunguza hasa kwa kutumia dawa ili kuonyesha nyama bado ni mbichi," a staff member said.
Okari also revealed that the outlets have a routine of cleaning and refurbishing the meat before sales. "Kila asubuhi huwa tunaingia kwanza kabla ya milango kufunguliwa na wateja kuingia na kufanyia nyama iliyobaki ukarabati kama vile kubadilisha karatasi iliyofunga na mengine ili ionekane ni mbichi," Okari said.
Since the exposé, Kenyans have taken to social media to express their concerns about the meat they consume.
