This archive report was first published on 15 July 2019.

On July 15, 2019, betPawa, a Kenyan betting firm, filed a court petition to temporarily suspend a decision cancelling its operational license.

The firm's license was cancelled by the Betting Control and Licenses Board (BCLB) for allegedly failing to renew operational permits.

betPawa claims the action by BCLB was carried out without prior notification, involvement, or participation, and that it stands to suffer monumental losses and exposure as a result.

The firm wants to be allowed to continue utilizing its pay bill numbers and short codes without interference by the BCLB pending hearing and determination of the case.

According to court papers, the case has been certified as urgent and hearing set for July 17, 2019.

betPawa argues that the government's actions were unlawful and that it does not only affect the firm but also its employees, stakeholders, and members of the general public.
