On July 15, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at Industrial Area Prison in Nairobi, Kenya.
Mark Nyamweya, a 27-year-old prisoner, had been arraigned at a Makadara court alongside five others for being drunk and disorderly.
After pleading guilty, Nyamweya was fined Sh200 with an alternative sentence of seven days in custody.
However, he failed to raise the Sh200 fine, resulting in his imprisonment.
According to a source at the prison, Nyamweya complained of stomach ache and diarrhoea, but despite receiving medication and porridge from a prison warden, his condition did not improve.
Now, Nyamweya's family is demanding answers from prison authorities and Soweto Police Station in Kayole regarding his death.
Family spokesperson Nelson Mageto stated that they were unaware of their kin's arrest and charges until after his passing.
