On July 14, 2019, Algeria's qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations final sparked widespread celebrations in France, but also led to unrest and 282 arrests nationwide.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner praised the police and firemen for their 'speedy reaction and professionalism' in containing the violence.

Unruly scenes were reported in Paris, Marseille, and Lyon, with 50 people arrested in the French capital and incidents between football fans and police on the Champs-Elysees avenue.

Dozens of cars were torched overnight in Lyon, and a woman was killed and her baby seriously injured in a car accident in Montpellier.

Paris and Marseille have large minority communities of Algerian origin, and football celebrations have sometimes been a source of tension.
