On July 15, 2019, France's interior ministry reported that 282 people were arrested nationwide after unrest erupted following Algeria's qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations final.

The unrest began after Algeria beat Nigeria 2-1 in the semi-final, with riotous celebrations taking place across the country.

According to the ministry, 249 of those arrested were placed in custody.

Earlier, on July 11, 2019, fans had gone on the rampage in central Paris, looting shops, after Algeria defeated Ivory Coast to reach the semi-finals.

Additionally, in the southern city of Montpellier, an Algerian football supporter lost control of his car while traveling at high speed and ran over a family, killing a woman and seriously injuring her baby.

Paris and Marseille are home to large minority communities of Algerian origin, where football celebrations have sometimes been a source of tension.
