On April 14, 2022, Education Minister Prof George Magoha made a significant statement that has sparked debate in the education sector.
Prof Magoha emphasized the importance of providing quality education to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, stating that they deserve the same opportunities as their peers.
"Children from areas like Kiandutu, Thika, and Huruma in Nairobi have been given funds to join universities. We must ensure that the interests of those who have been left behind due to poverty are taken care of," he said.
During the launch of a new CBC school in Muchungucha, Murang'a, Prof Magoha assured students from disadvantaged backgrounds that they would be given the opportunity to join national universities.
He also shared his personal experience of benefiting from the Jomo Kenyatta Memorial Trust scholarship and encouraged wealthy Kenyans to consider sponsoring students from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend private schools, thereby reducing congestion in public schools and providing opportunities for disadvantaged students to excel.
