On July 14, 2019, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Commission (EPRA) announced a slight increase in fuel prices, effective from midnight on the same day.

The price revisions saw a litre of petrol, diesel, and kerosene rise by Sh0.29, Sh0.88, and Sh2.31 respectively in Nairobi.

According to EPRA Director-General Robert Oimeke, the changes in this month's prices were due to the average landed cost of imported petroleum products and the depreciation of the Kenya shilling against the US dollar.

Mr. Oimeke attributed the changes to the decrease in the Free on Board (FOB) price of Murban crude oil and the mean monthly US dollar to Kenya shilling exchange rate.

The FOB price of Murban crude oil lifted in June was Sh6,480 per barrel, a decrease of 10.44 per cent from Sh7,235 per barrel in May 2019.

Over the same period, the mean monthly US dollar to Kenya shilling exchange rate depreciated by 0.68 per cent, from Sh101.2 per dollar in May, to Sh101.89 per dollar in June.

The price increase means that motorists in Nairobi will pay Sh115.39 for a litre of petrol, Sh103.88 for diesel, and Sh101.97 for kerosene, inclusive of VAT.

Residents in Mombasa and Kisumu will also experience a price increase, with a litre of petrol costing Sh112.74 and Sh121.03 respectively, diesel Sh101.25 and Sh109.77, and kerosene Sh99.39 and Sh107.86.
