Government Promises to Pay Harambee Starlets After Social Media Storm

Kenya's government has promised to pay Harambee Starlets, the country's women's national football team, after a social media storm highlighted unpaid allowances and bonuses dating back to 2017.

On July 10, 2019, a storm erupted on social media after it emerged that the government still owed players who were set to represent Kenya in the 2020 Olympics qualifiers.

Players, including captain Wendy Achieng, strikers Needy Atieno and Esse Akida, former captain Mary Kinuthia, and midfielder Cherish Avila, were axed from the team amid the storm online.

Principal Secretary for Sports, AMB. Kirimi Kaberia, has now come out to defend the government, promising to have the funds released and wired to the players by the end of the week.

"We are working on the issue and I promise that the girls will be paid as soon as possible. By the end of the week we will have released funds so that they can be paid," he said.
