On July 14, 2019, a civilian was shot dead by members of Sudan's feared Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the town of El-Souk, southeast of Khartoum, as angry residents protested against the paramilitaries.

The incident occurred when residents of El-Souk rallied outside the office of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) to demand that the RSF leave the town, according to witnesses.

"Residents of the town had gathered outside the office of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) to complain about the RSF," a witness said.

RSF members initially started shooting in the air but later opened fire at residents, killing a man and wounding several others, the witness added.

The killing occurred amid widespread protests in Sudan, which began in April after the army's ouster of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir.

Protesters and rights groups have alleged that the RSF, led by commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, was responsible for a deadly crackdown on protesters on June 3 in Khartoum, in which more than 100 demonstrators were killed.

RSF commander Dagalo has denied the allegations, saying they were an attempt to distort the image of his force.
