Deputy President William Ruto sparked a Twitter debate on July 14, 2019, after expressing surprise at Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju's new role as a chief strategist in Raila Odinga's inner circle.

According to a Sunday Nation headline story, Tuju has been touring Nyanza and receiving a warm reception, a stark contrast to last year when he was heckled during a tour in the same region after opposing Mr Odinga's presidential bid.

Responding to the news, Ruto tweeted, 'So our democracy is so liberal that the SG of the ruling party has become the chief strategist of the opposition!! Maajabu.'

Kenyan Twitter users weighed in on the matter, with some questioning the definition of a ruling party in Kenya and others pointing out the hypocrisy of Ruto's stance.

As the debate raged on, some users reminded Ruto that he had previously supported Aisha Jumwa, a member of the opposition, and that it was his democratic right to support the opposition.
