On Saturday morning, Nairobi police raided the home of businesswoman Joyce Akinyi in Nairobi West, arresting her and a Congolese man on suspicion of drug trafficking.
According to police, the two were found in possession of 2 kilograms of heroin valued at approximately Sh3 million.
The suspects are being held at Muthaiga Police Station pending their arraignment in court on Monday.
This is not Ms. Akinyi's first run-in with the law. In 2015, she was arrested with a suspicious powder, and in 2013, she was apprehended alongside Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala over claims of drug trafficking.
Her history of alleged involvement in drug trafficking dates back to 2008, when she and Wanjala were detained in India after authorities found them with undeclared Sh7.59 million.
Ms. Akinyi's personal life has also been marred by controversy, including a high-profile fight with her ex-husband, Nigerian businessman Anthony Chinedu, in 2009.
Chinedu was later deported in June 2013 after being accused of drug trafficking.
