Published on July 13, 2019, a disturbing trend has been uncovered where Safaricom subscribers' personal data has been stolen and used by scammers to borrow online.

According to our investigations, a third party has been giving out subscribers' personal details, including ID numbers, SIM and M-Pesa passwords, and dates of previous phone numbers. This information is only accessible to Safaricom, making it easier for scammers to deceive subscribers into giving out their details.

The scammers, using the number 0711466682, claim to be from Safaricom and ask for the subscriber's National ID serial number, which they use to hack into their M-Pesa, M-Shwari, and credit card accounts.

Our team has informed Safaricom about the issue, but instead of taking action, the company has been directing us to send an SMS to 333.

Subscribers are advised to be cautious and not give out their personal details to unknown callers.
