Published on July 13, 2019, Naisula Lesuuda, a trailblazing women's rights activist and current Member of Parliament for Samburu West constituency, reflects on her life in campus.
Lesuuda's journey to becoming a prominent figure in Kenyan politics began with her passion for journalism. She was determined to pursue a degree in communication and community development at Daystar University, despite her father's initial financial constraints.
Lesuuda's experience at Daystar was marked by culture shock, as she navigated the urban lifestyle and social cliques that came with it. However, she remained focused on her studies and developed her communication skills through extracurricular activities and public speaking.
During her time in campus, Lesuuda was known for her exceptional badminton skills, earning her the title of sports lady of the year. She also joined various clubs and groups, including Afrizo, where she showcased her dancing talents.
Lesuuda's academic journey was not without its challenges. She struggled with statistics and math, but excelled in units such as communication and culture, and electronic media and broadcast presentations.
Despite the demands of campus life, Lesuuda managed to balance her social life and academic responsibilities. She would often study late at night, ensuring that she stayed on top of her work.
Lesuuda's first heartbreak was a significant turning point in her life. Her boyfriend dumped her for being from a lower social class, leaving her with a lasting impression. However, she learned a valuable lesson from the experience, realizing that everyone's journey is unique and special.
As she looks back on her time in campus, Lesuuda offers words of wisdom to her peers: 'Just enjoy it and make the most out of it. You'll miss that moment for it never comes back.'
