On February 16 this year, Governor Ann Waiguru and lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo kicked off their wedding plans with a traditional engagement ceremony. The couple's love story began 10 years ago on a ferry at the Likoni channel, where they first met while traveling to Mombasa for a constitutional conference.
Waiguru and Kamotho's relationship has been fraught by controversies, scandals, and scrutiny from tabloids. However, despite the challenges, their love has endured.
According to the Saturday Standard, Kamotho had paid dowry and gone through the Kikuyu custom of paying for the locked gate to be opened, and identified Waiguru among women who had covered themselves to gauge his familiarity with his love.
Waiguru and Kamotho's first date was at a Thai restaurant in Nairobi, where they had their first fight. Waiguru was on phone the whole time, and Kamotho had to ask her why she was not paying attention to their date.
Waiguru explained that at the time, she had not mastered the delicate balance of separating work from her private life and would spend hours answering calls from people who wanted to engage in work. The couple has since agreed that when they are together and with family, phones are kept aside unless it is completely necessary.
Waiguru described Kamotho as an exceptional man, saying, “He is an exceptional man. There is no other like him. He was my pillar at the time and has always been. Kind, patient, supportive and level headed.”
The couple reportedly proposed to each other a few weeks ago at the lavish Lord Eroll hotel in Runda, Nairobi. Waiguru said yes, and the couple is now preparing to tie the knot.
