Deputy President William Ruto's office has been embroiled in a security and political mess after a fake assassination letter was circulated, allegedly commissioned by Ruto's allies.
The letter, dated May 30, 2019, claimed that a meeting had been convened by Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho at Hotel La Mada to discuss how to 'shore up support for the President in Mt Kenya and its diaspora.'
However, preliminary investigations found that the letter was not only false but was also written by people close to Ruto.
According to sources at Harambee House Annex, Ruto did not commission the letter, but rather was shaken when he got wind of it and took it up with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The letter's intention was allegedly to make Ruto appear as a victim of the region's betrayal while giving him sympathy in the region.
Dennis Itumbi, an ally of Ruto, was arrested on Wednesday while having lunch in Nairobi and is expected to be charged over the fake letter.
Itumbi will be charged with publishing alarming information, and if found guilty, will face a jail term of two years.
Chapter 66 of the Penal Code states that 'any person who publishes any false statement, rumor or report which is likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or to disturb the public peace is guilty of a misdemeanor.'
