David Githii, the former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA), has thrown his hat into the ring for the August 9 General Election, marking a significant entry into the crowded presidential race.
Speaking to the press on March 14, 2022, Githii emphasized his motivation for seeking the top job, stating, 'I Reverend David Muthoya Githii accept the challenge to change this country for the better together with like-minded colleagues. I hereby present my Presidential candidature in the forthcoming August 9, 2022, General Election.'
He further argued that it was high time for men and women of faith to take charge and lead the country towards prosperity and greatness, saying, 'It is now the time that men and women, with the background of serving God, take charge and show Kenyans the way God will run the country for prosperity and greatness.'
Githii's entry into the presidential race comes as no surprise, given his previous experience as a church leader. However, his decision to seek the top job has raised eyebrows, particularly given his tumultuous departure from the PCEA in 2014.
At the time, Githii had resigned from his duties in 2009 but his services as a minister were terminated in 2014. He had claimed that the church had failed to deal with sinful issues, including devil worshipping. His successor, David Gathanju, refuted his claims, stating, 'We believe in a sovereign God who is true that is Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. We denounce all forms of sins which include, but are not limited to homosexuality and lesbianism and devil worship.'
Githii will be competing against a host of other presidential contenders, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Deputy President William Ruto, businessman Jimi Wanjigi, and musician Reuben Kigame, among others.
