On July 12, 2019, a Hepatitis A outbreak was reported at Moi High School Mbiruri in Embu County, Kenya.

According to Embu County Education officer James Kiaru, the situation had been contained, but a 'health-break' was necessary to establish the cause of the outbreak.

Health officials suspect that the students may have consumed contaminated food or water.

Embu County Health CEC Joan Mwende requested that all students report back with a full medical report from a recognized health facility.

10 students were admitted to the Embu Children's Hospital, while 24 others were taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV), primarily spread through the ingestion of contaminated food or water, according to the World Health Organization.
