On July 12, 2019, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) took swift action after a tragic incident involving a matatu crew in Nairobi.
A 28-year-old woman, Florence Wanjiru, lost her life after being thrown out of a moving matatu registered under Killeton Sacco. The incident occurred on June 25, when Wanjiru boarded the matatu at the Kilimani bus stop, heading to the city centre.
According to NTSA, the driver, Joseph Muasya, and conductor, John Ndwai, were in charge of the vehicle, registration number KCC 086U, when the incident happened. The matter was initially reported at Kilimani Police Station as a hit-and-run case.
NTSA Director Francis Major has summoned Killeton Sacco officials to submit an incident report and has ordered a compliance inspection of all 114 vehicles in the sacco to assess their road worthiness. Additionally, drivers and conductors in the sacco will undergo mandatory road safety and customer care training.
