Kenya's betting industry is in disarray after telecommunication companies suspended paybill numbers for 27 firms, citing a government directive.

On July 11, the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) instructed clients of affected betting firms to withdraw their funds within 48 hours, as seen in a statement from BCLB's acting director, Liti Wambua.

"This is to permit you to allow gamers of the subject firms to withdraw any funds they may have deposited in the material period within 48 hours from the date hereof and duly notify them of the same, quoting this letter as authority," the statement read.

As a result, gamblers are now unable to place bets, with the suspension of paybill numbers affecting major betting firms in the country.
