Published on July 12, 2019, a report by the BBC revealed that Burundian refugees in Tanzania's Nyarugusu camp near the Burundian border were threatened with forced repatriation.
The refugees, who fled the unrest of 2015, told the BBC that they would not feel safe if they went back home.
The Tanzanian government has denied any plans to send the refugees back, with Christina Mwangosi, the interior ministry's spokesperson, stating, "Tanzania has no plan to force Burundian refugees back home."
However, the refugees claim that the head of the camp, Jumanne Singani, asked them to return voluntarily before they were forced back.
Audio recordings sent to the BBC by the refugees feature Mr. Singani urging them to leave, citing that they were causing problems for locals.
