On July 12, 2019, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) announced the appointment of Burundian tactician Ndayiragije Etienne as the interim coach of Taifa Stars, following the departure of Emmanuel Amunike.

Amunike's tenure as coach ended after a disappointing African Cup of Nations campaign, where the team lost all three matches to Senegal, Algeria, and East African rivals Kenya.

Etienne, who is currently the head coach of Azam FC, will lead the team in an interim basis, assisted by Coastal Union coach Juma Mgunda and Suleiman Matola, the assistant coach of Police FC.

The team is set to face Kenya in a two-legged African Championship (CHAN) qualifier in July and August, with the first leg scheduled for July 28 in Tanzania and the second leg on August 4 in Kenya.

Etienne is expected to name his squad soon, and the team will be away in Rwanda for the CECAFA Kagame Cup.
