On March 1, 2022, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) issued a public notice announcing a two-month traffic disruption on the Eastern Bypass and Kangundo Road junction.
The section of the road will be closed from Thursday, March 3 to Tuesday, May 3, 2022, to allow for bridge construction and the dualling of the Eastern Bypass.
Motorists heading to Embakasi have been advised to consider using the diverted slip road below the overpass, while pedestrians and motorists are urged to be cautious and follow traffic signs and marshals on site.
According to KURA, the expansion of the Eastern Bypass into a dual carriage started in 2021, with the government allocating Ksh12.5 billion for the project.
The construction is expected to ease traffic on the key road linking Mombasa Road to Thika Superhighway, which stretches through City Cabanas, Pipeline, Utawala, and Ruiru.
The closure affects traffic flow along those routes and parts of Mombasa Road, particularly around City Cabanas, due to the development of commercial real estate projects along Eastern Bypass and Kangundo Road.
