On July 11, 2019, the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) defended Members of Parliament (MPs) over claims of irregularly awarded hefty perks without the concurrence of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

The PSC, responsible for the welfare of 416 National Assembly and Senate members, as well as parliamentary staff, spoke out against SRC's accusations that MPs had usurped its mandate.

According to a statement read by Taveta MP Naomi Shaban on behalf of Speaker Justin Muturi, SRC had been treating MPs with disdain by clandestinely engaging with other government arms.

“They have a sinister motive against the MPs. Whenever we want to engage them they are always not available but constantly sneaking in gazette notices just weeks to elections reducing MPs’ pay,” Dr Shaban said at Parliament buildings.

The dispute began after SRC moved to court to stop the Sh250,000 monthly allowances paid to MPs, following a court ruling on October 5, 2018. The ruling, delivered by High Court Judge Chacha Mwita, stated that all state officers are entitled to a housing allowance provided by the State.
