On February 13, 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) flagged off the distribution of 4,200 bags of livestock feed supplements to six wards in Isiolo County, where drought had taken a toll on the animals.
FAO's Deputy Director, Beth Bechdor, led the officials in the distribution ceremony, which aimed at supporting the pastoralists in the region.
Bechdor emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, FAO, and other partners in addressing the drought challenges. She noted that the best approach to cushion the population from the effects of the drought should include cash transfers, technical training, and food supplements.
"We understand the drought's impact, but the best approach we should take to cushion the population from the effects should include the cash transfers programmes, technical training and the food supplements," she said.
Local farmer, Hussein Abdi, thanked FAO for the timely intervention, stating that the food aid had come as a relief as he had lost many animals to the drought.
The CAS for devolution, Abdul Bahari, urged counties in Northern Kenya to produce animal feeds locally and sell them to farmers at reasonable prices in times of drought.
