On July 10, 2019, a shocking case of alleged defilement came to light in a Malindi court, where a 16-year-old pupil from Green Wood School in Nyali testified against Turkish tycoon Elsek Osman.

The pupil, who was 13 when she joined the school, alleged that Osman, popularly known as Roho ya Paka, defiled her and two other girls, aged 16 and 17, at the school.

During the trial, the pupil stunned the court by admitting to having slept with several men, including some who were married, and to taking drugs and engaging in sex.

However, the prosecution's case was dealt a blow when renowned criminal lawyer Cliff Ombeta displayed a video clip that showed the pupil and her friends having a good relationship with Osman.

The pupil's testimony was also marred by inconsistencies, as she initially claimed that she was unaware of the alleged incident until Osman was arrested, but later recanted her statement, saying that she was not aware of it.

The case has sparked controversy, with human rights lawyer Maurice Mkan accusing the police and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of denying the parents of the victims their rights of access to their children.
