January 26, 2022 - Kenya is taking a significant step in the fight against cyber-crimes, partnering with the United Kingdom (UK) to protect its online systems from security threats.

State department for broadcasting and telecommunications Principal Secretary Esther Koimett emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that as the country moves towards fully embracing digital services, it is crucial to shield online systems from threats.

According to Koimett, there has been a steady rise in cyber threats globally, and Kenya is no exception, with various government ministries' websites constantly under cyber-attack.

"This training is therefore important as it will enhance our capacity as government communicators to effectively play our role in informing citizens about how to protect themselves from cyber threats like the ever-emerging scams and fraudulent schemes," Koimett said.

The training aims to strengthen the strategic communications capability of the UK government, its allies, and partners to jointly understand and counter cyber threats from hostile state actors.

British Deputy High Commissioner Josephine Gauld highlighted the importance of cyber security, stating that technology has made lives easier, but cyber security threats might lead to a national security crisis if not well handled.
