Published on January 26, 2022, a tropical cyclone has left a trail of destruction in its wake, claiming the lives of 34 people in Madagascar and two in Mozambique.

Cyclone Ana made landfall in Angoche district, Nampula province, Mozambique, on Monday, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rainfall that affected not only Mozambique but also Malawi.

According to the Madagascar's Natural Disaster Management Agency, nearly 65,000 people have been left homeless since the end of last week.

The Mozambique's National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction reported that the storm partially destroyed 546 houses and completely destroyed another 115, while injuring 66 people.

The provinces of Nampula, Zambezia, Tete, Niassa, Sofala, and Manica were hit by the storm, with Cyclone Ana weakening from a moderate tropical storm to a tropical depression by Tuesday.

Mozambique has been hit by strong storms and cyclones in recent years, with Cyclones Idai and Kenneth killing at least 1,000 people in 2019.

Malawi also felt the effects of the cyclone, with classes suspended in all schools and the country's Electricity Supply Corporation experiencing a system shutdown resulting in a power outage in most parts of the country.
